Okay, okay, we must admit that we are huge fans of Leonardo DiCaprio – and not ONLY because we still call out “Jack” sometimes thanks to his captivating performance in Titanic, but because he is also an avid environmentalist. Over the past few years, Leo has donated funds to protect endangered elephants and whales. He helped secure the conservation of forests threatened by palm oil expansion and helped spread the message behind Cowspiracy by getting it on Netflix. On top of all that, he’s made speeches in front of the UN declaring our collective need to keep fossil fuels in the ground and get serious about the looming threat of climate change.
And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, the Leonardi DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) just announced that following the April signing of the Paris Agreement, R20 (Regions of Climate Action) they are forming a new partnership to accelerate climate change solutions. As part of this, the foundation is providing a $650,000 grant for R20 to help identify and fund the best energy and infrastructure initiatives with the potential to create positive environmental and social benefits to communities across the world.
According to a statement from LDF, “Together, R20 and LDF are following the mission of the Cities Climate Finance Leadership Alliance (CCFLA) that was launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2014 to encourage investment in low-emission, climate resilient infrastructure in cities, and to close the investment gap in climate friendly projects in urban areas over 15 years. Under this framework, R20 will develop and construct these projects, as well as measure and report on their impact.”
Taking the promises to create change from the Paris Agreement into reality, this grant will hopefully help bring about real and lasting change. We will be looking forward to announcements about the projects that the grant is making possible.
