Donald Trump Says Vegans Should Be Punished, Too

Donald Trump said on Wednesday that if abortions are banned in the United States, women who seek them should be subject to “some form of punishment.” He later recanted his comment after receiving backlash from both sides of the aisle.
On Thursday evening, Trump fanned the flames of controversy once more when he stated that another group of people should be subject to criminal sanctions: vegans. In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Trump stated that those who eschew meat, dairy, eggs, and other animal products “should be thrown in jail.”

“That type of diet is a threat to the American way of life,” Trump said. “We’re a Christian country, a pro-life country, and a meat-and-potatoes country. We’re supposed to go forth and multiply and eat our meat. That’s how it’s done in America.”

This time, most Republicans backed Trump’s remarks. Texas Senator Ted Cruz stated that he has “always been suspicious of vegans,” adding that anyone who threatens one of his home state’s largest industries, animal agriculture, “should be on our watch list, at the very least.”

Democrats, on the other hand, were quick to point out the hypocrisy. “This is quintessential nanny-state politics,” Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton said. “Republicans want to punish vegans for what they choose to eat and women for what we choose to do with our own bodies. It’s disgraceful.”

When pressed about what sanctions for vegans would entail, Trump simply stated that they should be jailed and force-fed meatloaf. Punishment for high-profile vegans, such as Bernie Sanders and former President Bill Clinton, would include force-feeding of Trump’s own company’s steaks.
